Putting aside every other issue, Israel’s settlement policy in the West Bank alone is sufficient to destroy the possibility of a viable Palestinian State (i.e, a politically independent entity with autonomous control over its borders, its resources and the movement of its people.). Since 1967 and its victory in the Six Day War, Israel has developed the public policies and policing strategies to ensure a steady and incremental appropriation of Palestinian lands and resources while also severely restricting Palestinian rights and freedoms. These policies and strategies continue more or less unabated even during so-called peace negotiations such as the current talks initiated at Annapolis in November, 2007.

The biggest unknown is how far he will go to dismantle the quasi-police state structures that the Bush regime has instituted under the umbrella of a war against terrorism. This involves far more than appointing better judges. It means a radical revising of both legislation and executive policies and exposing the ultra-secret rules and practices to the light of day. Much can be done, as we know from what was accomplished in the 1970s, reining in the CIA and the FBI. But the situation is worse now and requires more. History may well judge Obama most of all on what he does in this domain. Up to now, he has been quite silent about this arena.

Ethan Bronner reports for the NY Times about the newest outrage resulting from US supported Israeli control of Gaza. We all know of the continuing depredations being perpetrated against Palestinians on a daily basis, the death and injuries, the almost complete control of most aspects of daily life. This new insult arises seamlessly from this control and is ominous because the canceling of scholarly exchange goes to the heart of academic freedom further eroding the idea that Israel has any interest in fostering Palestinian civic society. Whether by intent or casual indifference, Israel is alienating those who would most likely be needed and most open to establishing a stable peace in the region. Such impeding of Palestinian intellectual activity (and development) not only impoverishes Palestinian society but adds to the hallowing-out of Israel’s moral and intellectual culture. This is, unfortunately, of a piece with the recent banning of Norman Finklestein, reported on here, and the increasingly hostile attitude towards alternative/dissident positions in Israel as exemplified by the harassment of Ilan Pappe’ and the late Tanya Rheinhart, among others. As Americans we need to ask ourselves what is ultimately more worthwhile, funding the Israeli military to oppress Palestinians or funding educational exchanges that almost necessarily foster greater understanding cross-culturally. The obvious contradiction of US funding being used to stop US funding, besides the dark humor of the self-erasing nature of US actions, should raise serious concerns about US policy in the region.

The obvious interpretation as to why the U.S. government isn't demanding removal and why Israel's government is not actually removing settlements: Both are actively working against the establishment of a Palestinian State while flapping their lips in favour of this proposition.

Less obvious (perhaps not) -- the U.S. and Israel will continue to steal Palestinian land and resources for years and this will continue to undermine the possibility of a viable Palestinian State.

but

Could it be that after such a ruthless and immoral collection of actions, Israel will still find itself as insecure as ever? After all, the Palestinian people will still be there wanting to live decent lives on their land with their resources. Where's the security in that right?
Yes! A built-in insecurity! One useful to continuing a systematic jurisdictional and semantic brutality (i.e., one oppresses through a policing of space and language.).
The problem: How to "secure" the minds of Palestinians and Israelis alike.
Speculation: Securing minds requires securing space. How are these people called U.S.-Jews, Israeli-Jews, Israelis, Arab-Israelis, Palestinians, Christian-Palestinians, Jewish-Palestinians, Druids etc. to be secure? That is, how can the minds of most of the various tribes and familial alignments be secured?
Obviously and embarrassingly (the obvious being regarded as impossible because idealistic - "humans can't be that way"), obviously and embarrassingly, the means to securing the various tribal minds requires that tribal mind (tribal consciousness) expand. In other words, the idea of "my tribe", "my people" needs to expand. Ideally this consciousness expansion would evolve to the point of total inclusion of all tribes. Then many of the grounds and pretexts for insecurity become meaningless. Police space? For whom? (Yes. Of course. So many holes in this one .... . )
What will remain? Us. Who? Us human beings. Don't worry though - there's more than enough problems with us monkeys as individuals. Who needs tribal self-absorption breeding division and conflict on top of that!

For others it will come as a shock. For others still it will be anti-semitism to even suggest as much.

Throughout the world, May 1 is celebrated as May Day - the international workers' day. The only exception is the United States. The irony is that May Day is celebrated in memory of an American event - the Haymarket Riot in Chicago. On May 1, 1886, in many U.S. cities workers engaged in a general strike in support of an eight-hour day. In Chicago, 80,000 workers marched down Michigan Avenue. On the fourth day of the demonstrations, at the very end of a rally in Haymarket Square, violence broke out. Its origin is contested to this day, but some policemen were killed. Subsequently, leaders of the strike were arrested and four were executed for what was termed murder. Although they were German immigrants to the United States, they died singing not The Star-Spangled Banner but La Marseillaise, an expression of international class solidarity. Despite this, politicians in the United States have always tried to downplay the importance of class conflict as a defining issue of U.S. politics, which is why the United States does not celebrate May Day.

In 2008, there is a fiercely contested election for the presidency in the United States. There is a primary contest in the Democratic Party between a woman and an African-American. The Republican candidate is a White male. In the beginning, everyone denied that either race or gender was an issue. But as the contest has become prolonged and more fierce, both race and gender as themes have come to the fore. Everyone is still denying that class is an issue.

A counter-productive Washington policy in recent years has been to boycott and punish political factions or governments that refuse to accept United States mandates. This policy makes difficult the possibility that such leaders might moderate their policies.

Two notable examples are in Nepal and the Middle East. About 12 years ago, Maoist guerrillas took up arms in an effort to overthrow the monarchy and change the nation’s political and social life. Although the United States declared the revolutionaries to be terrorists, the Carter Center agreed to help mediate among the three major factions: the royal family, the old-line political parties and the Maoists.

In 2006, six months after the oppressive monarch was stripped of his powers, a cease-fire was signed. Maoist combatants laid down their arms and Nepalese troops agreed to remain in their barracks. Our center continued its involvement and nations — though not the United States — and international organizations began working with all parties to reconcile the dispute and organize elections.

Too many precious children have suffered and died as a result of politics. Another outrage is about to occur and you can help stop it. On April 23 a program on French TV Channel 5 highlighted a tragedy that may occur at any moment. This news is not even discussed in the United States.

The government of Israel is boycotting Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, during his visit here this week. Ehud Olmert, who has not managed to achieve any peace agreement during his public life, and who even tried to undermine negotiations in the past, "could not find the time" to meet the American president who is a signatory to the peace agreement with Egypt. President Shimon Peres agreed to meet Carter, but made sure that he let it be known that he reprimanded his guest for wishing to meet with Khaled Meshal, as if the achievements of the Carter Center fall short of those of the Peres Center for Peace. Carter, who himself said he set out to achieve peace between Israel and Egypt from the day he assumed office, worked incessantly toward that goal and two years after becoming president succeeded - was declared persona non grata by Israel.

President Jimmy Carter's sensible plan to visit the Hamas leadership this week brings honesty and pragmatism to the Middle East while underscoring the fact that American policy has reached its dead end. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice acts as if a few alterations here and there would make the hideous straitjacket of apartheid fit better. While Rice persuades Israeli occupation forces to cut a few dozen meaningless roadblocks from among the more than 500 West Bank
control points, these forces simultaneously choke off fuel supplies to Gaza; blockade its 1.5 million people; approve illegal housing projects on West Bank land; and attack Gaza City with F-16s, killing men, women and children. Sadly, this is "business as usual" for the Palestinians.

Last week's attack on the Nahal Oz fuel depot should not surprise critics in the West. Palestinians are fighting a total war waged on us by a nation that mobilizes against our people with every means at its disposal -- from its high-tech military to its economic stranglehold,
from its falsified history to its judiciary that "legalizes" the infrastructure of apartheid. Resistance remains our only option. Sixty-five years ago, the courageous Jews of the Warsaw ghetto rose in defense of their people. We Gazans, living in the world's largest open-air prison, can do no less.

March 3, 2008

Good Morning, Hamas
By Uri Avnery

We Israelis live in a world of ghosts and monsters. We do not conduct a war against living persons and real organizations, but against devils and demons which are out to destroy us. It is a war between the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness, between absolute good and absolute evil. That's how it looks to us, and that's how it looks to the other side, too.

Let's try to bring this war down from virtual spheres to the solid ground of reality. There can be no reasonable policy, nor even rational discussion, if we do not escape from the realm of horrors and nightmares.

After the Hamas victory in the Palestinian elections, Gush Shalom said that we must speak with them. Here are some of the questions that were showered on me from all sides:

Do you like Hamas?

It is said that Hamas was created by Israel. Is that true?

Did the Hamas election victory show that Islam was on the rise among the Palestinian people?

.. why did Hamas win?

Can one reasonably expect the Palestinians to overthrow Hamas themselves?

.. how can one reach a settlement with an organization that declares that it will never recognize Israel and whose charter calls for the destruction of the Jewish state?

What should we speak with Hamas about?

Won't Hamas exploit the cease-fire to arm itself?

If the cease-fire holds, what will be the next step?

So a formal peace is impossible?

Why would Hamas accept it?

.. what is the place of Abbas in all this?

Is time working for us?

"The feeling of humiliation and the hate the roadblocks create increase the tendency of Palestinians to join militant groups and Hamas," Shlomo Brom, a former chief of the army's planning division who signed the letter, said.

As an alternative, Brom suggested using mobile army forces to set up temporary checkpoints when they receive concrete information of militant activity.

"We believe these alternatives are no worse than the movement restrictions" in preventing terror attacks, Ilan Paz, another signatory of the letter and a former head of the army's administration of Palestinian civilian affairs, said.

"You have to understand that there is damage in having the Palestinian people with its back to the wall, not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, unable to improve their economy, unable to move from place to place," Paz told Israel Radio.

"This creates a reality that creates terror, and we have to remember that."

One after another, the final lights are being turned off, and a moral gloom is falling upon us as we stand at the edge of an abyss. Just last week, three more lights were turned off. The Winograd Report did not come out clearly against the fact that Israel embarked on a pointless war; the Supreme Court authorized collective punishment and the attorney general concluded that the killing of 12 Israeli citizens and someone from the territories by the police does not warrant a trial. The final keepers of order, the lighthouses of justice and law, are reconciling themselves with the most serious injustices of the institutions of authority and no one so much as utters a word about it. The upsetting and depressing crop of a single week has drawn the moral portrait of the country.

Sixty is the number of the year. There will be three invocations of this number over the coming months: One to celebrate, another to lament and I'll get to the third in a moment.

Those celebrating will celebrate that which the others lament - the establishment of the State of Israel, entailing as it has the Dispossession and relentless, ongoing destruction of the community of Palestinians. Much like other western colonial nations the celebration of the existence of one nation will be inescapably connected with the near decimation of another. It will celebrate the establishment of so-called security for one people, at the expense of that of another. To put a finer point on it, those celebrating will be celebrating an existence (i.e., "existence" in the sense of actual historical policies and practices) inextricably connected to ethnic cleansing and cultural destruction (with some arguing also, genocide).

Some celebration.

While some celebrate 60 years of the State of Israel and others lament 60 years since the Palestinian Nakba, I'm going to celebrate a different 60 year anniversary:

Sixty years ago the world established, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Adopted and proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 217 A (III) of 10 December 1948)

Curious isn't it? That the establishment of the State of Israel - as a haven for Jews from persecution - should occur in the same year as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. That the political rights of the Palestinians would already have been wholly violated by 10 December 1948. That the U.N. oversaw this violation, in fact, giving it official sanction. That today, 60 years later, the call for Israel to stop violating the political rights of the Palestinians is as relevant as ever. Finally, that despite all this, human rights as a universal principle remains the key instrument to informing national governments of the degree of their depravity against their own or other peoples.

Right now - when degenerate but mighty forces within western culture act to denigrate the Universal Applicability of Human Rights - right now is the time to insist on these rights as forcefully as ever.

Many of these efforts have highlighted the role that could be played by people and governments across the world in providing solidarity with the Palestinian struggle by exerting urgent pressure on Israel to alter its current structure and practices as an apartheid state.

Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! Western rationality at its calculated finest:

We must stop others from having/using what we have - the ultimate means to literally holocaust massive numbers of people, totally destroy total environments and spread radiation for thousands of kilometers causing untold mutations and disease and eventual death.

How?

By using our weapons of mass destruction to literally holocaust massive numbers of people, totally destroy their total environment and spread radiation for thousands of kilometers causing untold mutations and disease and eventual death.

Nuclear annihilation to prevent nuclear annihilation. The use of weapons of mass destruction to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction.

This passes for western reason? Western thought so bankrupt, so devoid of content that all it can muster up is massive killing to prevent the imagined future possibility of massive killing? But if this is what passes for western reason mustn't that mean that western reason has past? I think it does. We've past ourselves by. We're done with. We've nothing left to offer but rationales for the ultimate in destruction.

Yes, atrocities occur elsewhere in the world: the populations of the Sudan, the Congo, Tibet, Iraq and Afghanistan all suffer under the blow of atrocities. And? And atrocities are committed almost daily by the Jewish State - Israel - against the Palestinian population. That is a fact. Don't be intimidated away from a fact. Misplaced guilt has no place here either. Face it. It's the truth.

The Jewish State is barbaric. This is not a fact. It is an interpretation or a characterization of Israel's daily onslaught of killing, land theft and subjugation of the Palestinians. Whether or not you find this characterization apt, however, is likely related to your interest in learning the truth about these daily atrocities. Look into it yourself (e.g., Washington Report on Middle East Affairs; Foundation for Middle East Peace; Public Committee Against Torture in Israel; The Electronic Intifada). Alternatively, look to Part II (to follow).

The State of the Jews ought to protect its citizens, of course, including its Palestinian population (sadly this cannot go without saying). However, Israel might consider other more plausible means to achieving state security than the near daily murdering of Palestinians. It might want to rethink starving people (see also) as a military tactic. Or of imprisoning over one million Palestinians in an area a mere 360 sq. km. It might want to rethink the consequences of flat out stealing Palestinian land, bit by bit through the work of legal sounding policies and criminal-zealot-settlers - a truly disgusting lot these colonizers. Or polluting or stealing their water and other resources. Or bombing the Gazans only electrical power plant. Or withholding medical supplies. Or letting Palestinians die waiting at check points. This is the State of the Jews. These (above) are merely a gloss on the brutal facts. It is not hyperbole, empty rhetoric nor anti-Semitism to state it. It is willful blindness to deny it. It is inhuman to ignore it. It is morally right to actively oppose it.

Once again Tom Feeley of the Information Clearing House highlights a video clip of an interesting question and answer session back in 1989 (kudos to CubsWinBearsRule for the clip).

Wolf Blitzer and Norman G. Finkelstein are asked the following questions:

To Blitzer:

You imply that Israel has the right to exist because of what happened to the Jews during World War II. Why in Palestine? Don't the Palestinians too have a right to a secure homeland? Why do they have to suffer and make way for the Jews?

To Finkelstein:

The intifada is not an isolated problem. This problem is affected by four wars, terrorism and the Holocaust. Why is it not relevant, in your opinion, for Israel to be secure?

Three days after killing at least 20 Palestinians in helicopter and tank attacks on the Gaza Strip—and just one week after President George W. Bush met in Israel with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other top officials—Israel on Friday, Jan. 18 ordered all border crossings into Gaza temporarily closed as it continued its deadly attacks on more than 1.5 million Palestinians already denied food, clean water, electricity and medical supplies. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced that the transfer of medicines and humanitarian aid into Gaza now will be allowed “only in exceptional circumstances.”

Despite the fact that Paul has a strong personal approval ratings and polls well against his competitors; the media has deliberately---and very successfully---kept him out of the public eye. That will be more difficult to do now that his campaign war-chest is packed with contributions and his base of support is expanding across the country.

We expect the media to ditch its failed strategy of simply ignoring Paul and take the more aggressive approach of attacking him outright. Now that Paul has established himself as a credible threat to the warmongering, autocratic corporate elite; he will have to be discredited through a coordinated media-blitz which will target his voting record, his character, and any other trivial foible which may incite public scorn.

He’s got a bull’s-eye on his back.

Here are some articles (links and excerpts) that collectively aim to persuade the reader of the benefits of Ron Paul's non-interventionist foreign policy objectives for the State of Israel. The main point: Were Ron Paul to end all foreign aid to Israel and all other countries receiving such aid, in dollar terms Israel would actually be strengthened. In short, Ron Paul's policy on foreign aid is good for Israel. I see the value of such non-intervention not so much in terms of the relative strengthening of Israel but rather in terms of how it would increase the likelihood of serious moves toward negotiated peace amongst the relevant regional participants. Strengthened or not, I'm inclined to view Israel standing on its own amongst Arab and Muslims nations, as promoting beneficial trade relations rather than promoting detrimental expansionist actions. U.S. foreign aid is largely U.S. meddling in the sovereignty of nations. It never seems to serve the interests of peace. The meddling is more likely intended to foster various kinds of discord and instability deemed of value to an Imperial America worldview. I think we've had about enough of that murderous mentality.

I'll build this one over time from most recent. It is obviously a small selection but will grow. My aim is to focus on the general picture - the situation in Gaza and its causes. The daily killings are not included nor the frequent articles reporting accusations of tunnel building nor even the reports of the acquisition of arms by Hamas. Most of those killed are Palestinian. This is clearly documented. Hamas would be foolish to not try and procure arms just as I suppose Israel would be foolish to not try and stop it. At any rate, the means to procuring arms seems incidental in the sense that since Hamas must arm against Israel, how it goes about doing this is part of the nature of resisting a brutal occupation. What will be included then are articles focusing on living/economic conditions, the strategies and tactics of oppression as well as Human Rights reports at a minimum.

Israel's Supreme Court rejects rights groups' appeal against Gaza fuel cuts - Israel's Supreme Court rejected an appeal by human rights groups on Thursday for an injunction against fuel cuts to the Gaza Strip, rejecting their argument that the cuts cause humanitarian harm. - 01/03/08 - International Herald Tribune

B'Tselem Press Release - According to B'Tselem, two themes clearly emerge from examination of the spectrum of human rights concerns in 2007. The first is the use of security justifications for virtually every Israeli action in the Occupied Territories . There is no doubt that Israel faces serious security threats, and is entitled and even obligated to do its utmost to protect its population. However, far too often, Israel fails to appropriately balance its security needs with equally important values, including protecting the rights of Palestinians under its control. In addition, Israeli authorities often exploit security threats in order to advance prohibited political interests, such as perpetuating settlements and effectively annexing them to Israel . -- The second theme arising from the report is the lack of accountability of Israeli security forces, in all matters relating to human rights. This can be seen clearly in the reluctance of the state to thoroughly investigate violations and to prosecute those responsible for them. The lack of accountability can also be seen in the denial of most Palestinians' right to compensation when they are injured through no fault of their own by Israeli forces. - 12/31/07 - B'Tselem

One of the first on-line responses to the publication of the letter to President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was a simple, straightforward question: "What is in it for Israel?" The "it" referred to guidelines the letter proposed for an agreement that would end Israel's occupation of the territories the IDF overran forty years ago in a conflict—as Israelis were reminded by the celebrated author David Grossman when he addressed a recent commemoration of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's assassination—that is now in its 100th year.

What is in it for Israel should be self-evident, but now that three new Israeli generations have been born having no memory of Israel without settlements, it no longer is; for too many, the occupation—and the spiral of Israeli-Palestinian violence that has come with it—is a given, the natural order of things.

An agreement that leads to the end of an occupation that with the best of intentions humiliates and brutalizes an entire nation should be more than enough of a reason to go for it. The subjugation and permanent dispossession of millions of people is surely not the vocation of Judaism, nor is it an acceptable condition for a Jewish national revival.
